Summer is here and with the sunlight illuminating concrete buildings and green areas alike, we are reminded of Berlin’s unmistakable character and beauty. To make the most of the summer months despite cancelled holiday plans, we have created this list of some of our favourite spots within and outside the city. Whether Berlin is your home or you are travelling from afar – these places are always a good choice for picnics, sunset walks and meeting people in line with social distancing.
Tiergarten in the heart of Berlin is one of Germany’s largest parks, surrounded by some of the city’s most famous sightseeing spots such as Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz. In fact, it is slightly bigger than London’s Hyde Park and just as perfect for a stroll after a casual shopping tour or an invigorating morning jog. The park’s tree-lined green areas and paths are popular for picnics and games, but also home to cultural and political sites like the Victory Column and Bellevue Palace.
Viktoriapark in Kreuzberg is the only place in Berlin where you can unwind next to a romantic waterfall. The park invites to linger for picnics, with great views of the city and numerous restaurants and pubs within reach.
This beautiful baroque palace offers great views and is a true gem, especially in summer. The wonderful garden with a pond and a fountain speaks for itself.
Close to the bustling Alexanderplatz, Volkspark Friedrichshain is where you want to spend your day. With its magical fountain, the Märchenbrunnen, this park offers a romantic getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.
This popular park is dog-friendly and offers a promenade along the river Spree, perfect for a bike ride or riverside picnic. When the weather permits, you can rent a boat for a ride to the Insel of Jugend, a small island, where you can enjoy views of the surrounding landscapes. A trip to the park also requires a walk over the bridge Elsenbrücke with its fantastic views over the city.
Strandbad Wannsee in the West of Berlin has been one of the city’s top summer spots for years and allows its visitors to enjoy the hot summer months to the full. Vast sandy beaches, restaurants, a park area, a waterslide and children’s playground as well as beach volleyball attract a variety of holidaymakers from within and outside Berlin.
